Supplementary Problem 1

Equation 12.1 on page 532 is an expression for the energy, En, of an electron in level n of the hydrogen atom. The expression is actually valid for any one-electron one-nucleus system where the nuclear charge number is Z. (The values are negative for reasons that are explained in the reading). It just so happens that the average kinetic energy of such a one-electron system is -En. For the fermium nucleus (Z=100) with one electron in the n=1 level, calculate the kinetic energy (in J) and then the average velocity v in m/s. Comment on the result.
