Text: 'Structure and mechanism in protein science' (1999)  by Alan Fersht with supplements on biophysical techniques.

 

Topics:

* Properties of amino acids, peptide bond

* Forces for protein and nucleic acid conformational stability

* Protein secondary and ternary structure with brief description of crystallography and NMR.

* Dynamics of protein structure and folding

* Ligand binding

* Enzyme kinetics with transient states and inhibition

* Factors in enzymatic catalysis and selected mechanisms

* Quaternary structure and allostery/cooperativity

* Regulation and control

* Physical techniques of spectroscopy, fluorescence, hydrodynamics, chromatography and membrane potential will be integrated into above.

 

 

 Grading:

* Hour exam Sept. 23  (100 pts)
